I am always elated to hear or read of experiences whereas Parents have taken time to engage and spend time with their children. Such are necessary and these experiences if missed cannot be recaptured.

Often when the children are small time seems awfully long and many years before they become young adults exiting the home and on their own.  However, if you ask Parents, many will tell you that it seemed only yesterday that their children were young; the years passed awfully fast and they grew up in “no time” or “too soon.”

In talking with baby boomers, I have been surprised to hear a number of them as they reminisce speak of their greatest regret being not having spent enough time with their kids when the kids were growing up.  In a number of instances it is not that the children (now adults) do not care or care to spend time with their aging Parents; they simply learned to function as children without the Parent’s presence and such became a pattern. The roles of Parent – child has now reversed itself.  Now, that some baby boomers have time on their hands and are more aware of the importance of family and family gatherings, their children are now wage earners and a good number forgo spending time with family in an effort to earn or work at a living. In fact you may have adopted your Parent(s)’ work habit(s).  Distance is also a major factor as to why many families are not able to get together as often as they would prefer.

Parents, it is important to remember that

·         You are your child’s first and on-going teacher

·         You set the example; consciously and unconsciously

·         Your actions in spite of what you say reveal those things that are utmost important

Whether you have noticed or not; there appears within our society to be a shift with Parents; many are electing to 1) forgo jobs that do not allow them to spend enough quality time with their children and 2) Parents are becoming self-employed and entrepreneurs in an effort among others things to provide themselves with a more flexible schedule. Many Parents are determining that which they are good at and marketing their own skills, talents and abilities.

Remember Parents; “no one is going to do for you what you should be doing for your own child” (Mrs. Dorothy Barron).

BUSINESSES and Year Round Schooling for Students by Mrs. Dorothy Barron

Business Owners and Leaders; what were your thoughts if any on last week when Parents Taking Charge in Education’s blog Article and video, Year Round Schooling for Students – As a Parent should I be concerned  was posted? Did the blimp on your mental radar screen signal that you should have taken note or did you think or say, this doesn’t affect me? If you are a Business Owner or Leader and did not think last week’s article affected you; I beg to differ.

Perhaps, you are asking, what is the connection between Businesses and Year Round Schooling for Students? According to those who have/are implementing year round schooling, shorter breaks are to occur for one or two weeks at a time periodically throughout the year as opposed to the one traditional School Summer break of approximately 2 months. A number of Parents select their jobs; work availability, vacation time, etc. around their children’s school schedules, especially summer break which occurs at the same time and during the same period for most school systems across the nation.

How will year round schooling for students affect your business should your employees - some of whom are Parents incur problems with the care of their children during mini- school breaks? We are not stating that such will, but there is a possibility that such can and if so, how will such affect and effect your workforce and business; to what extent and what is your plan of action? Will you lose some of your work force and/or best employees? How will such affect your business if your company operates in various geographical regions?

                Students being in school year round can affect a number of businesses in one way or another; that which may be obvious is that supply and demand most likely will increase with year round schooling.  On the other hand businesses may have to deal with the aforementioned questions, which may necessitate reviewing, studying, obtaining feedback (uttermost from those directly affected) and formulating a plan of action. It might not be a wise idea to wait until problems begin and begin to adversely affect both your employees and business. From where I sit, I continue to see a shift in the traditional workforce inside companies in which a number of Parents (not totally limited to Parents) are leaving in an effort to begin spending more time with children, family and/or other pursuits. Will or is this shift beginning to adversely affect your business; if so, have you considered the implementation of at least two very important actions that may be necessary and in which you and your business should be engaged?

Parents, it is never too early to teach children about bestowing upon others kindness and charity.  As Parents, we set the example.  On today in our 4 Pt. Series - Keeping Hope Alive this Holiday Season – Pt. 3 Thanks and Supplication for a better Tomorrow; you will be introduced to two families. You can also use their or your own situation this Christmas as a teaching opportunity.

Is your Christmas going to be prosperous and abundant or less fortunate with your having to be frugal and thrifty? If frugal and thrifty due to being less-fortunate, do not bemoan that which you do not have.  If you have little ones make your and their holiday as merry and festive as you can; remember we all have much in which to be thankful.

Note; the above statement was to “make YOUR and their holiday as merry and festive as you can....” You do not have to spend a lot of money to create a festive look – just some time.

The first family is the Belgardes; they have much and much for which to be thankful. Out of their abundance of wealth they made sure some less-fortunate individuals benefitted from their abundance, although you will never hear them boasting about that which they have done for others.

The second family is the Belgraves; their story is very different. Dad has been out of work for many months and the family’s savings have dwindled, but Mom does not let what she terms “a little setback” spoil the family’s Christmas Holiday and why should it? The Christmas Holiday to these families is all about Family and being together.

As we continue to hope; have faith and work for a better tomorrow; on today, let us appreciate, enjoy and give thanks for family and that which we do have for we all have much in which to be thankful.

Bullying Series Pt. 4- Teaching Children the Effects of Bullying by Mrs. Dorothy Barron

 

 

On today, at Parents Taking Charge in Education Blog, we want to conclude our Part 4 Series on Bullying with the topic, Teaching Children the Effects of Bullying as we wrap up the month of October which has been designated as National Bullying (Awareness) Month and our topics dedicated to Cyber Bullying and Bullying in general.

 Bullying and cruelty are so prevalent among and within our adult society that it may be difficult for many children to understand that these are negative and abusive behaviors and not acceptable behaviors to exemplify or emulate.  

Sometimes Parents and others automatically assume that children understand a matter when they really do not. So often they mimic the behavior of adults and their peers.  Children are the products of that which they hear, see and are introduced to within their environment and society, whether private or public.  In other words, they “do as they see and not (necessarily) as told.” It is important that children gain an understanding of that which constitutes Bullying in order to fully understand the effects of bullying.

As a Children’s/ Young Adults Book Reviewer, I have had the pleasure of reading the works of some fantastic authors and on today, I would like to introduce you to Author; Elaine Marlier, who has written an Animal Series titled, Without a Home…. The three books (titles below) that I have had the pleasure of reading and reviewing may be that which you may want to consider as a resource to utilize for helping children understand Bullying and the effects of bullying. Author Marlier’s books are comprised of heartfelt and appealing stories about dogs, cats and smaller animals and their adoptions and have been brought to your attention in today’s post as a possible resource on the subject of Bullying. The stories in her books:

·         Are easy stories to read to a child/ren or as I would recommend, allowing children (with your parental consent) that are able to read them to do so on their own and alone – such allows the child to absorb, formulate, think independently and draw his/her own conclusion(s). Such can also negate/eliminate discussion when read alone and possibly the child feeling as if he/she must attempt to defend and/or justify certain actions involving Bullying.

·         Can teach lessons on love, compassion and genuine concern for others

·         Can assist with understanding how others feel when subjected to cruelty, abuse, bullying and other negative behavior(s).

·         Can show how one’s actions can affect others and the effects of one’s actions upon another or others

·         Can show how one can make a positive difference

·         Can assist the child with gaining an understanding of Bullying; the effects and  the results of one and/or others actions

·         Can be utilized to allow a child/ren to gain an understanding on their own through a resource(s) you have approved and provided to your child. As a Parent, you are teaching through a resource you have provided to your child.

·         Can become a platform for discussion, dialogue and/or an open line of communication between you and your child/ren.

On last week, Mrs. Dorothy Barron of Parent Taking Charge in Education provided a link to our Video: Practical Ways to Address Bullying, which has been posted to our designated YouTube Channel.

On today and in conjunction with this month being designated as Cyber Bullying and Bullying in general , we haveput together a series of questions in response to the question; what would be some questions to consider asking my school about Bullying to become a better informed and knowledgeable  Parent on the subject?

In addtion to a previous and pertinent question, what is the school’s policy on Bullying, listed in another Parent Taking Charge in Education blog post on the subject of Bullying,  we have put together a list of 10 questions you, the Parent may want to consider asking your child’s school on the subject of Bullying.
