5 Things to Never Say to a Child by Mrs. Dorothy Barron

5 Things to Never Say to a Child by Mrs. Dorothy Barron

As Parents, we sometimes experience frustration, disappointments, anger and embarrassment by the actions of our children and at times, life simply overwhelms us. When such occurs be careful that you do not take it out on your child/ren. There are 5 things you should never say to your child and they are:

·         You’re bad – explain that the action is unacceptable or bad and not the child. If a person is told something repeatedly, he/she will eventually believe or accept it as fact.

·         You are no good just like your Dad or Mother – a serious mistake; the child may set out to prove it. The child is a product of both Parents, yet an individual- treat him or her as such.

·         You will never amount to anything – If you cannot find positive things to say, do not burden the child with negative baggage.

·         You are dumb and/or stupid – Most, if not all of us are inept at at least one things; look no further than the person in the mirror- “you” or “me.” The method and/or instrument could be barriers which prevents the child from grasping the concept and learning.

·         I wish you had never been born – regardless of your wishes, the child was born; uttering such cruel words can only make the situation worse.

Words said in anger and/or carelessly can never be retrieved. Once indelibly imprinted on the brain or heart, they lasts a lifetime. Weigh your words carefully, as well as your actions; they can speak even louder than words.

Parents Taking Charge in Education Blog: Parents- Helping Your Children Achieve Outside the Classroom by Mrs. Dorothy Barron

Parents- Helping Your Children Achieve Outside the Classroom by Mrs. Dorothy Barron

Parents, there are a number of things you can do to assist your child or children with building self-esteem and confidence while teaching them to become more responsible.
Some of you would be pleasantly surprised at your child’s efficiency and proficiency when provided with certain opportunities and encouragement that challenge and test their skills and abilities of which you, the parent can provide outside the classroom.
The key is exposing your child to various experiences which allows him/her to find, develop, accomplish and achieve certain goals. There are a number of ways to accomplish such and may consist of activities in which your child is presently engaged.

Ÿ  Volunteerism - many children engage in this worthwhile endeavor. They may assist a neighbor, relative, church member, some organized entity or stranger on a regular basis. One way to expand this activity and give your child a sense of his/her importance and this important endeavor is to allow him/her to keep records - compute time, dates and hours, type of services rendered. Even though the child does not receive payment, have him/her assign a monetary value to each performed service.
Ÿ  Chores: assigning chores on a regular basis is necessary to assist the child with becoming responsible. If your child monopolizes the computer, utilize it as a teaching and chore tool. Examples: If, on a budget, assign the child the duty of locating food coupons each week and/or recipes to assist you or them with planning quick and easy menus/meals. Assign your child or children the chore of planning an excursion, whether it’s one day or the family vacation (try and limit your intervention by providing only the general and necessary guidelines such as the budget, number of days, dates).
Ÿ  Jobs- Introduce your child early to entrepreneurship and business skills. Your child may offer such services as babysitting, lawn care, or assistance to the elderly, etc. As baby boomers age, more assistance and services will be needed to accommodate them. Volunteerism to the elderly at some point may lead to you granting your child permission to provide services for hire to assist seniors or your child babysitting the young and advancing to sitting with the elderly. More seniors are opting to remain in their homes; some may not be able to afford a professional lawn care service, but with your permission, may be willing to hire your son/daughter to care for his/her yard. Your child’s earning of money can present a great opportunity for him/her to learn about budgeting, expenditures, spending and saving money.

During my experience in working with young people, I have found that most give you pretty much what you expect. Whatever activities or goals your child endeavors to accomplish, you, the parent want to ensure that they do their very best. Also, thank you, please and I am very proud of you are words that the young, as well as not so young enjoy hearing. Parents, do not underestimate the long term effects of positive endeavors and experiences of which you provide and expose your children to outside the classroom on today; they can and will definitely assist them in the future.

A Formal Welcome and Introduction to Parents Taking Charge in Education Blog by Founder and Author, Mrs. Dorothy Barron

Greetings and Welcome, I am Mrs. Dorothy Barron; Founder of Parents Taking Charge in Education Blog. I look forward to meeting and becoming acquainted through and as a result of this blog with many parents as well as those who serve parents, students and our Education System.

Parents, this present era in which we live can present a great opportunity and change for both you and your child/ren in the area of Education; each child can learn and become educated in the optimum and most productive setting for him/her. Each child’s innate talent/ability; his/her imaginations and dreams with the assistance of the unlimited capabilities of the Internet are boundless.

Education is both political and big business, therefore as parents, you must become well-informed decisions makers, confident, educated about the education process and advocates for your child/ren to insure that each child receives the best and most positive learning experience.

I have spent 16 years as a volunteer in the education arena- both private and public schools (7-9 fulltime); I have interacted and/or worked with all sectors involved and observed both positive and negative aspects of each sector. For my volunteer services in Education, our schools, Parents and community are found at this blog. Please do not become overwhelmed, my volunteer services list what I have done, not who I am.

Previous posts at this Blog, Parents Taking Charge in Education have provided tips to Parents and tips on parenting issues; parental school involvement and reasons why some Parents may choose non-involvement, as well as various levels of involvement and the stake of various sectors within our society as it relates to Education and our most precious resource- our children were discussed in a 6 Pt. Series.

Parent Taking Charge in Education has five mission objectives, which are to offer tips and tools to help Parents:# 1.and those who serve Parents and children with becoming more knowledgeable about the Education System; 2. make informed and more confident decisions about your child’s education; 3. become proactive advocates& resolve conflicts with Educators;
4. become a major part of the decision making process in Education as you work with your children and their schools and 5. become more effective at parenting.

You are encouraged to get involved in your child/ren’s education and/or school(s), but may not have been shown the most simple and effective ways to do so. Some parents hesitate to get involved for lack of not knowing where to start. You may be a grandparent raising a grandchild or non-custodial adult who have not interacted with a school since you or your children were school age. In order to be most effective, becoming involved in and with your child’s education and/or school is an acquired process.

For those interested, please join me on next week as we begin assisting you with becoming informed, knowledgeable and more confident as you become or continue being a major part of the decision making process in your child/ren’s education and/or school(s). Next week, we will discuss “School Conferences. “ The following week, some tips and actual tools will be introduced.
